Si bien se considera la predicatión evangélica y apostólica, hallarse ha muy claro que la predicatión de los católicos predicadores ha de ser vicios y virtudes, persuadiendo lo uno y disuadiendo lo otro. Y lo más continuo ha de ser el persuadirlos las virtudes teologales y disuadirlos los vicios a ellas contrarias. Y desto hay mucha materia en los seis libros primeros desta historia, y en la postilla sobre las epístolas y evangelios de los domingos de todo el año que hice, y muy más resolutamente en la doctrina cristiana que los doce primeros predicadores predicaron a esta gente indiana, la cual yo, como testigo de vista, copilé en esta lengua mexicana. Although preaching is considered to be evangelical and apostolic, it must appear very clear that the preaching of the Catholic preachers should be of virtues and vices, encouraging the one and discouraging the other. And the most constant should be urging1 upon [people] the theological virtues and dissuading them from the vices at variance with them. (And of this there is much material in the first six Books of the Historia and in the Apostilla dealing with the Epistles and the Gospels for all the Sundays of the year which I prepared; and more definitively in the Doctrina Cristiana which the first twelve Fathers preached to these native people, which, as an eyewitness, I compiled in this Mexican language.) In this volume, to provide more convenience and help to the preachers of this new Church, I have dealt with the moral virtues, according to the understanding, and practices and language these same people maintain regarding them. In this treatise I do not follow the arrangement other writers have followed in dealing with this subject; rather I follow the order of the persons, the ranks, the crafts, and the trades which exist among these people, setting forth the goodness of each person and then the badness, with a multitude of nouns, adjectives and verbs (where among them there is a great abundance of very characteristic and very extensively used terms). In this volume are also contained, in the same pattern, all the parts of the body, the internal and external organs in much detail, and after this the majority of the ailments to which the human body in this land is susceptible, and the cures, and with this nearly all the generations which have come to settle this land.
