días ayunaban ante desta fiesta, y el mediodía desta fiesta tocaban los caracoles y pitos y trompetas, etcétera, y pasaban mimbres por las lenguas, ofreciéndole aquella sangre. Y hasta los niños que estaban en las cunas los sacaban sangre de las orejas para ofrecer, y todos, chicos y grandes, ofrecían sangre de las orejas en aquella hora. Esto hacían sin decir nada, y hacíanlo delante de la imagen del Sol, que estaba en un cu que se llamaba Cuauhxicalco, pintada o esculpida como agora se pinta el Sol, como una cara humana y con rayos que salen della, como una rueda. Y en la fiesta del Sol siempre, cada año, mataban muchos esclavos y captivos a su honra en sus cúes, y decían que todos los que morían en la guerra iban a la casa del Sol a reposar.

They would do this without saying anything, and they would do it in front of the image of the sun, which was in a cu that was called Cuauhxicalco; and [this image] was painted or sculpted like the sun is painted now: with a human face and with rays coming out of it, like a wheel. And every year during the festival of the sun, they would always kill many slaves and captives in its honor in their cúes; and they said that all those who died at war would go to the house of the sun to rest.

\nat the time of the day count Four Movement, every two hundred and sixty days. And when the feast day came, there was fasting; there was fasting for four days. And when the feast day of the day count arrived, at noon shell trumpets were sounded; straws were drawn through the flesh. And they cut the ear [lobes] of small children lying in the cradles. And everyone drew blood. And there were then no greetings. There was only the drawing of blood; straws were drawn through the flesh; incense was offered. Everyone [did so]; no one was abstaining.
\nAnd there1 was the image of that one, [the sun, upon] the so-called Quauhxicalli. There his image was set up. His image was designed as if it had the mask of a man; his sun’s rays shot forth [from it].2 His sun costume was round, enclosed by feathers, enclosed by roseate spoonbill feathers. There in his presence the fasting was done, [and] the passing of straws through the flesh, the laying of offerings, the slaying of quail.
\nAnd at the time of his feast day, also many captives died. And also it was said that those who died in war went to the home of the sun; they dwelt with the sun.
