Y se hacía la dicha lumbre a media noche. Y el palo de do se sacaba el fuego estaba puesto sobre el pecho de un captivo que fue tomado en la guerra, y el que era más generoso. \nThey would clean their houses very thoroughly, and after finishing, they would put out all the fires.
\nThere was a special place where this new fire would be lit and made, and this was on the top of a mountain called Huixachtlan, which rises along the borderlands of the towns of Itztapalapan and Colhuacan, two leagues away from Mexico. And this fire would be lit at midnight. And the wooden stick with which the fire was lit would be placed upon the chest of a captive seized in battle, who was the most noble [among them]. And so they would light this fire from a very dry stick, with another little stick that was long and thin like an arrow, which they would twirl very fast between the palms of their hands, as if twisting it. And once they were able to light [the fire] and it was already started, they would then immediately open up the captive’s insides, tear out his heart, and throw it into the fire, thus adding fuel to [the fire] with it. And the entire body would come to an end in the fire.
\nAnd the only ones who had the task of lighting the new fire were the priests; the one who belonged to the barrio of Copolco especially would hold that office. He himself would light and make the new fire.
